As you may have noticed by the title, Tony and I met each other through the internet. We met through a MUD (multi-user domain - gaming environment) called LegendMud. Ironically, our characters on the MUD (Katya and Hunter_Rose) fell in love and got married. This created a trend of MUD tinyplots leading to MUD marriages, and we have gone down in Legend's history as the first married MUD couple.
Meeting through the Internet was a unique experience. Especially since Tony lived out in Michigan and I was living in Berkeley, CA when we met. For three months, we sent lots of email and spent an unspeakable amount on phone bills. Many phone calls later, we decided to meet in person. Tony decided to fly out to California, since he hadn't been out here before.
It was a nervous meeting - Tony had told me that he would be wearing a black leather jacket. So, there I was, waiting at the gate in SFO looking for a tall guy in a black leather jacket. There just happened to be 4 men with leather jackets on the flight that day. I found out that he got a seat way in the back of the plane, and ended up being the last person out.
Tony spent a week out here before flying back. We got together with Parri, who had flown out to meet another one of our mud friends, Gan, who lives in Fremont. So, I got to meet three people from Legend that week.
After a couple more flights out to Michigan and California, we both decided that the short amount of time allowed in a long distance relationship wasn't enough - plus, the long distance bills and airline tickets were starting to add up. Right around this time, I found out that the grant that funded my job at the UC Berkeley Main Library had not been renewed that year, so I only had two more months left. Since Tony's job situation was more stable than mine, I took the plunge and decided to make the move out to Michigan.
